Health and wellness

Health refers to the absence of illness. Wellness refers to not just physical health but emotional, spiritual, social issues also.Wellness is much more than the absence of illness; it is health-promoting behaviors to achieve your full potential. In other words, wellness is the pursuit of your best possible health and well-being. It is a conscious choice, self directed and self motivating.

“By cleansing your body on a regular basis and eliminating as many toxins as possible from your environment, your body can begin to heal itself, prevent disease, and become stronger and more resilient than you ever dreamed possible”

What Is Health and Wellness?

World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (illness).”

WHO defines wellness as “the optimal state of health of individuals and groups,” and wellness is expressed as “a positive approach to living.”

The primary difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving it. You truly cannot have health without first achieving wellness. Wellness has a direct influence on overall health, which is essential for living a robust, happy, and fulfilled life.

Importance of Health and Wellness

The Relationship Between Health and Wellness

When people think of health and wellness, they often combine and use them interchangeably.

Tips to Improve Health and Wellness

Whereas you can make a target weight loss and health goal, sustainability relies on actively improving within the different components of wellness. These tips can help nurture an ongoing basis:

1. Eat Whole Foods

While diet tends to be primarily viewed to impact physical condition, food has a well understood link between food and mental health, including boosting memory and improving mood.

A natural way to ensure adequate nutrients is by consuming whole foods rather than boxed and processed products. Comprise the diet of whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean and plant-based proteins, and healthy fat sources.

2. Exercise Regularly

Exercise stimulates a healthy mind and body and the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity weekly.

But you can also break away from the monotony of a structured workout regimen, as the highest importance is dismissing a sedentary lifestyle. Increase activity in your day by walking the dog, hiking with friends, and taking the steps over an elevator.

Walking and biking whenever possible not only emboldens both physical and mental health, but supports environmental wellness by reducing fuel emission. (And not to mention, saving on gas money!)

3. Embrace Mental Exercises, Too

Most people do not consider mental exercises when they are trying to get fit physically, but these types of activities can actually help you achieve your goals more sufficiently and boost brain power!

Tackling daily brain exercises helps support intellectual wellness, while practicing yoga or other combinations of mental and physical activities can help promote a better attitude towards weight loss.

4. Achieve Quality Sleep

Sleep is important for your mind and body, as it strengthens memory and concentration, lowers stress intensities, increases daily energy, diminishes cravings, and regulates hunger levels.

Sleep your way to such benefits by taking short power naps as needed and getting a full night’s rest on a regular basis. The National Sleep Foundation encourages healthy adults to sleep seven to nine hours of quality on a nightly basis.

5. Take a Day of Rest

In addition to achieving adequate sleep on a nightly basis, allow yourself days of rest and recovery.

Make sure to take one day out of the week to do something spontaneous or plan out a weekend trip you can look forward to, as doing so makes make the whole “dieting” process more enjoyable. (And life should be enjoyed!)

Even if you cannot get away every weekend, make sure you do small things that you love on your day off. This could be something as simple as going for a leisurely stroll, taking a walk in the park, or spending an evening relaxing to a movie.

6. Bask in Social Support

Social circles and support networks are invaluable for overall wellbeing and a sense of purpose.

A 75-year old study discovered good relationships keep us happier and healthier, though the data truly is not so surprising. We as human need to feel connected to others is one of our basic needs that need to be met.

Form and turn to your strongest supporters, including family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. You can likewise get them involved in your wellness journey by inviting them over for a home cooked meal or exercise class.

7. Enjoy the Journey

While you can make a target weight loss and health goal, sustainability relies on actively going through the different components on wellness.

And rather than feeling overwhelmed with large feats alone, take on small tasks, re-strategize as needed, surround yourself with positive people, embrace the journey, and enjoy the process of achieving personal fulfillment and wellness!

How Do the Eight Dimensions of Wellness Affect Your Life?
Wellness is a term Union Members all know and use often, but what exactly is it and what does it mean for a person to be well? According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), wellness means overall well-being. It incorporates the mental, emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of a person’s life. Each aspect of wellness can affect overall quality of life, so it’s important to consider all aspects of health. This is especially important for people with mental health and substance use conditions because wellness directly relates to the quality and longevity of your life (1).

The eight dimensions of wellness are emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual. All are very important to someone’s overall well- being. In the coming paragraphs I will explain in more detail, each dimension and also give you a few ways to make improvements in each dimension.

Emotional wellness is the ability to cope effectively with life and create satisfying relationships. Life has a way of throwing us curve balls and can be very difficult at times. One way to improve emotional wellness is to put a positive spin on life situations. Try to cultivate a positive feeling even during negative times throughout your life. This is much easier said than done, but with practice can be achieved. You do need to be mentally aware of your emotions and when a negative feeling arises from attempt to change it into a positive one. Rejection and loss are two major issues that can have a big impact on our emotional well-being. It’s important to recognize the feelings you have during times of rejection and times of loss, but not important to dwell in them or remain in that negative emotional state Remind yourself how much worth you have by listing the positive attributes you possess in the area of life that you were rejected, whether it’s your work life, dating life, social life etc.

Environmental wellness means good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well being It’s important to feel good about where you live, work, play, and wherever else you may spend time felt good for the planet is also a major part of environmental wellness. Here are a few ways to improve your environmental well-being. The first is an obvious one. Clean and organize your living space. Then clean and organize your workspace. After these two, tasks are done you should feel a greater sense of comfort and much less anxiety. This is a big boost for your environmental well-being. Now it’s time to take a look at the big picture, and that’s the planet Union Members live in. Start recycling, use less water and pick up trash when you come across it on the ground. Union Members to have to live in this environment, so it’s important Union Members each does our part to keep it clean.

Financial Wellness is the satisfaction of your current and future financial situations. It’s not about how much you make that makes you financially well, but rather are you satisfied with how much you make? Someone who makes $30,000 a year could be more financially well then someone who makes $100,000 per annum. It’s a proven fact that those who are financially well are more productive at work. Planning is the key to attaining financial wellness. It’s important to plan a budget, set goals, plan a saving’s strategy, and plan for retirement. These are just a few of the plans that need to be made to have financial wellness in your life. Once the planning is complete it’s time to stick to your plans and put them into action. A saving’s plan will create financial margins in your life for those unexpected car/house repairs or whatever else might come up that will cost you money. Taking these steps will help guide you to a financially well future.

Intellectual Wellness is recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. A person who is intellectually well never stopped learning. They’re thirsty for knowledge and recognize that there is so much more to be learned.. Some ways to improve your intellectual wellness are to improve time management, remove objectivity, and improve your critical thinking. It’s important to make time for reading a book, or learning a new hobby. Remove objectivity by keeping an open mind about new ideas, insights, thoughts, expressions, and values. Always question and keep your brain active, and you will begin to improve your intellectual wellness.

Occupational Wellness is personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work. You need to have a feeling of contribution and achievement in the work that you do. Developing occupational wellness allows you to communicate your values through whatever work you choose to do. This could be paid work or un-paid work. Here are some ideas on how you can improve your occupational wellness. Start by reflecting on what occupations will leave you feeling gratified. Look into what tasks you enjoy doing. Also set career goals for yourself and constantly be working toward achieving those goals. Taking these steps will lead you to have more occupational wellness in your life.

Physical Wellness is recognizing the need for physical activity. Exercise offers many benefits to a person’s overall well-being. It improves your chances of living longer and healthier, relieves symptoms of depression and anxiety, improves your mood, and prevents weight gain.

Social Wellness is developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system. This is why spending quality time with close friends is so important. One of the best things you could do to become more socially well is to become a contributing member of your community. Good communication skills will allow you to resolve problems that you may have with other people that you socialize with on a day to day basis. These are a few ideas to lead you to become more socially well.

Spiritual wellness is expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life. Spiritual wellness is unique for everyone. It’s the deepest part of you that gives meaning in your life. Some ways to improve spiritual wellness are to meditate, pray, and listen to affirmations. A spiritually well person is ok with spending time alone and reflecting. It’s important to take time to search into the things that provide meaning in your life. It could be your beliefs, values, and morals that give meaning in your life. Make sure that these things guide the decisions you make as you live out your life. Practice these tips and you will become more spiritually well.

These eight dimensions to wellness all play an important role in our lives. Focus on the areas that you are weak in and start from there; it can seem a bit overwhelming if you try to change everything at once. As you work in the areas that you’re struggling in most, you will find that stress in your life will start to decrease, and positive feelings will start to increase. You’ll begin to produce more feel good neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. Life will surely be more enjoyable.

Data Privacy Law In the philippines

Republic Act No. 10173, otherwise known as the Data Privacy Act is a law that seeks to protect all forms of information, be it private, personal, or sensitive. It is meant to cover both natural and juridical persons involved in the processing of personal information

Data Privacy Act of 2012 or formally known as Republic Act 10173 of the Republic of the Philippines. This Act was passed and promulgated with the title: An Act Protecting Individual Personal Information in Information and Communications Systems in the Government and the Private Sector, Creating for this Purpose a National Privacy Commission, and for Other Purposes.

It is the law or “policy of the State to protect the fundamental human right of privacy, of communication while ensuring the free flow of information to promote innovation and growth. The State recognizes the vital role of information and communications technology in nation-building and its inherent obligation to ensure that personal information in information and communications systems in the government and in the private sector are secured and protected.” (Sec. 2)

WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF THE DATA PRIVACY ACT?

As mentioned earlier, the Data Privacy Act applies to any natural or juridical persons involved in the processing of personal information. It also covers those who, although not found or established in the Philippines, use equipment located in the Philippines, or those who maintain an office, branch, or agency in the Philippines.

WHAT IS PROCESSING OF PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Under Sec. 3(j) of the Data Privacy Act, “[p]rocessing refers to any operation or any set of operations performed upon personal information including, but not limited to, the collection, recording, organization, storage, updating or modification, retrieval, consultation, use, consolidation, blocking, erasure or destruction of data.”

In other words, processing of personal information is any operation where personal information is involved. Whenever your information is, among other things, collected, modified, or used for some purpose, processing already takes place.

Approach

The Philippines law takes the approach that “The processing of personal data shall be allowed subject to adherence to the principles of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality.”

The Data Privacy Act explicitly states that its provisions are not applicable in the following cases:

(a) Information about any individual who is or was an officer or employee of a government institution that relates to the position or functions of the individual, including:

(1) The fact that the individual is or was an officer or employee of the government institution;

(2) The title, business address and office telephone number of the individual;

(3) The classification, salary range and responsibilities of the position held by the individual; and

(4) The name of the individual on a document prepared by the individual in the course of employment with the government;

(b) Information about an individual who is or was performing service under contract for a government institution that relates to the services performed, including the terms of the contract, and the name of the individual given in the course of the performance of those services;

(c) Information relating to any discretionary benefit of a financial nature such as the granting of a license or permit given by the government to an individual, including the name of the individual and the exact nature of the benefit;

(d) Personal information processed for journalistic, artistic, literary or research purposes;

(e) Information necessary in order to carry out the functions of public authority which includes the processing of personal data for the performance by the independent, central monetary authority and law enforcement and regulatory agencies of their constitutionally and statutorily mandated functions. Nothing in this Act shall be construed as to have amended or repealed Republic Act No. 1405, otherwise known as the Secrecy of Bank Deposits Act; Republic Act No. 6426, otherwise known as the Foreign Currency Deposit Act; and Republic Act No. 9510, otherwise known as the Credit Information System Act (CISA);

(f) Information necessary for banks and other financial institutions under the jurisdiction of the independent, central monetary authority or Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to comply with Republic Act No. 9510, and Republic Act No. 9160, as amended, otherwise known as the Anti-Money Laundering Act and other applicable laws; and

(g) Personal information originally collected from residents of foreign jurisdictions in accordance with the laws of those foreign jurisdictions, including any applicable data privacy laws, which is being processed in the Philippines.

WHAT IS PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Under Sec. 3(g) of the Data Privacy Act, “[p]ersonal information refers to any information whether recorded in a material form or not, from which the identity of an individual is apparent or can be reasonably and directly ascertained by the entity holding the information, or when put together with other information would directly and certainly identify an individual.”

In other words, personal information is any information which can be linked to your identity, thus making you readily identifiable

WHAT IS PRIVILEGED INFORMATION?

Under Sec. 3(k) of the Data Privacy Act, “[p]rivileged information refers to any and all forms of data which under the Rules of Court and other pertinent laws constitute privileged communication.” One such example would be any information given by a client to his lawyer. Such information would fall under attorney-client privilege and would, therefore, be considered privileged information.

In 2012, the Congress of the Philippines passed Republic Act No. 10173, also known as the Data Privacy Act (DPA) of 2012. Five years later, the DPA’s Implementing Rules and Regulations was put in effect on September 9, 2016, thus mandating all companies to comply.

The act is a necessary and important precaution in a world economy that’s swiftly going digital. In 2014, it was estimated that 2.5 quintillion — or 2.5 billion billion — bytes of data were created everyday. This includes unprecedented knowledge about what real individuals are doing, watching, thinking, and feeling.

Companies must be held accountable not only for what they do with customer data — but how they protect that data from third parties. The past few years of security breaches, system errors, and ethical scandals within some of the country’s major banks have reminded us that there is much work to be done.

So, where to begin for institutions who want to comply with RA 10173 and be proactive about their consumers’ digital privacy?

What is RA 10173?

RA 10173, or the Data Privacy Act, protects individuals from unauthorized processing of personal information that is (1) private, not publicly available; and (2) identifiable, where the identity of the individual is apparent either through direct attribution or when put together with other available information.

What does this entail?

First, all personal information must be collected for reasons that are specified, legitimate, and reasonable. In other words, customers must opt in for their data to be used for specific reasons that are transparent and legal.

Second, personal information must be handled properly. Information must be kept accurate and relevant, used only for the stated purposes, and retained only for as long as reasonably needed. Customers must be active in ensuring that other, unauthorized parties do not have access to their customers’ information.

Third, personal information must be discarded in a way that does not make it visible and accessible to unauthorized third parties.

Unauthorized processing, negligent handling, or improper disposal of personal information is punishable with up to six (6) years in prison or up to five million pesos (PHP 5,000,000) depending on the nature and degree of the violation.

Who needs to register?

Companies with at least 250 employees or access to the personal and identifiable information of of at least 1,000 people are required to register with the National Privacy Commission and comply with the Data Privacy Act of 2012. Some of these companies are already on their way to compliance — but many more are unaware that they are even affected by the law.

How do I remain in compliance of the Data Privacy Act?

The National Privacy Commission, which was created to enforce RA 10173, will check whether companies are compliant based on a company having 5 elements:

  1. Appointing a Data Protection Officer
  2. Conducting a privacy impact assessment
  3. Creating a privacy knowledge management program
  4. Implementing a privacy and data protection policy
  5. Exercising a breach reporting procedure

Privacy program required

The law requires that any entity involved in data processing and subject to the act must develop, implement and review procedures for the collection of personal data, obtaining consent, limiting processing to defined purposes, access management, providing recourse to data subjects, and appropriate data retention policies. These requirements necessitate the creation of a privacy program. Requirements for technical security safeguards in the act also mandate that an entity have a security program.

Surveillance

Interestingly, the Philippines law states that the country’s Human Security Act of 2007 (a major anti-terrorism law that enables surveillance) must comply with the Privacy Act.

What should you do in the event of a data breach?

The law requires a data breach notification within 72 hours upon knowledge of the breach or reasonable belief that it has occurred to the NPC and the data subject. The notification is generally required when the breach involves sensitive personal information or any other information that may be used to enable identity fraud; this information has been acquired by an unauthorized person; and the acquisition is likely to give rise to a real risk of serious harm to the affected data subject.

The NPC may investigate the breach, depending on its nature or if there is a delay or failure to notify. Inquiries may include on-site examination of systems and procedures.

Why is the Data Protection Act important?

The Data Protection Act is important because it provides guidance and best practice rules for organisations and the government to follow on how to use personal data including:

  1. Regulating the processing of personal data
  2. Protecting the rights of the data subject
  3. Enabling the Data Protection Authority (The ICO) to enforce rules
  4. Holding organisations liable to fines in the event of a breach of the rules

The DPA’s rules are very thorough and cover rules around sharing of data, and data security. At the heart of it are eight common sense rules known as the ‘data protection principles’ that all organisations collecting and using personal information are legally required to comply with.

The law provides stronger protection for more sensitive information such as:

  • Ethnic background
  • Political opinions
  • Religious beliefs
  • Health
  • Sexual life
  • Criminal history
